Itinerary

The group will be picked up from either of our pick up locations: Maitighar Mandala / Bhadrakali Temple or Kupondole.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Hanuman Dhoka Palace Complex – the former royal palace of Malla and Shah kings.
  • Taleju Temple – one of the oldest and most revered temples (view from outside).
  • Kumari Ghar – home of the living goddess, where you might catch a glimpse of her at the window.
  • Kasthamandap – the wooden pavilion that gave Kathmandu its name.
  • Freak Street – stroll through this once-famous hippie-era lane.

Tip: The square is best explored on foot—bring small cash for the heritage entry ticket and local guides.

OPTIONAL TEA BREAK: ENJOY TEA OR LIGHT BREAKFAST AT A ROOFTOP CAFÉ WITH VIEWS OF THE TEMPLES (E.G., BASANTAPUR TOWER CAFÉ).

Drive (or walk ~15 mins from Thamel) to the former royal palace, now open to the public.

WHAT TO SEE:

  • Main palace halls and throne rooms preserved as during royal use.
  • Royal attire, gifts, and photographs, giving insight into modern Nepal’s monarchy.
  • The tragic 2001 royal massacre site is also marked here (viewed respectfully).
  • This visit gives a contrasting modern chapter to the ancient art of Basantapur.

LUNCH BREAK: Choose a nearby Restaurant:

  • Mezze by Roadhouse (Durbar Marg) – terrace with palace views.
  • OR2K (Thamel) – relaxed vegetarian-friendly Middle Eastern dishes.

A short, scenic drive up the hill (~15 min) leads to one of Nepal’s most iconic sites.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Main stupa with the all-seeing Buddha eyes overlooking the valley.
  • Shantipur and Harati Devi temples nearby.
  • Viewpoint – the best panoramic view of Kathmandu Valley.
  • Monks chanting, prayer wheels, and fluttering prayer flags create a serene atmosphere.

Tip: Watch your belongings—the monkeys are bold!

Just a 10-minute drive downhill from Swayambhunath.

Sections worth visiting:

  • Historical Museum (Chhauni building) – weapons, coins, and royal artifacts.
  • Art Gallery – traditional paintings, paubhas, and sculptures
  • Buddhist and Hindu art exhibitions showing Nepal’s cultural evolution.

It’s a quieter, more reflective end to the day that ties together themes you’ve seen—religion, royalty, and artistry.

Wrap up your day with a gentle stroll, souvenir shopping, or early dinner in Thamel.
